The Lugar Lecture Series presents former Ambassador Susan Rice. Ambassador Susan E. Rice is currently Distinguished Visiting Research Fellow at the School of International Service, American University, and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She is also a Contributing Opinion Writer for the New York Times.

Previously, Ambassador Rice served President Barack Obama as National Security Advisor and U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In her role as National Security Advisor from July 1, 2013, to January 20, 2017, Ambassador Rice led the National Security Council Staff of approximately 400 defense, diplomatic, intelligence and development experts. She chaired the Cabinet-level National Security Principals Committee, provided the President daily national security briefings, and was responsible for coordinating the formulation and implementation of all aspects of the Administration’s foreign and national security policy, including all diplomatic, intelligence, homeland security and military efforts.

As U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and a member of President Obama’s Cabinet (2009-2013) to which she was unanimously confirmed by the Senate, Rice worked to advance U.S. interests, defend universal values, strengthen the world’s security and prosperity, and promote respect for human rights. In a world of 21st Century threats that pay no heed to borders, Ambassador Rice helped rebuild an effective basis for international cooperation that strengthened the United States’ ability to achieve its foreign policy objectives and made the American people safer.

From 2002-2008, Rice was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, where she conducted research and published widely on U.S. foreign policy, transnational security threats, weak states, global poverty and development.

Ambassador Rice served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1997-2001. In that role, she formulated and implemented U.S. policy towards 48 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and was responsible for the management of all of the U.S. Embassies and more than 5,000 U.S. and Foreign Service national employees. Rice was co-recipient of the White House’s 2000 Samuel Nelson Drew Memorial Award for distinguished contributions to the formation of peaceful, cooperative relationships between states. From 1993-1997, she served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council at the White House, as well as Director for International Organizations and Peacekeeping on the National Security Council staff.

Rice began her career as a management consultant with McKinsey and Company where she served natural resource, industrial and some consumer companies.

She is currently on the boards of Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Ambassador Rice previously served as an independent Director of the Bureau of National Affairs (now Bloomberg BNA) and on many non-profit boards. Rice received her Master’s degree (M.Phil.) and Ph.D (D.Phil.) in International Relations from New College, Oxford University, England, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She was awarded the Chatham House-British International Studies Association Prize for the most distinguished doctoral dissertation in the United Kingdom in the field of International Relations in 1990. Ambassador Rice received her B.A. in History with honors from Stanford University in 1986, where she was junior Phi Beta Kappa and a Truman Scholar. In 2017, French President Francois Hollande presented Ambassador Rice with the Award of Commander, the Legion of Honor of France, for her contributions to Franco-American relations.

A native of Washington DC, Ambassador Rice is married to Ian Cameron, and they have two children. She is an avid tennis player and retired basketball player.

On April 2, Kenyon faculty, staff and students will celebrate intellectual and creative life on campus.  

 The Kenyon Showcase features the high-impact practices that make a Kenyon education spectacular. These include but are not limited to student research projects, artistic performances, internships, community-based research and community-engaged learning, senior honors theses, capstone courses and projects, off-campus study, independent study, service learning, first-year seminars and experiences and collaborative assignments and projects.  

 Students, faculty and staff mentors will be sharing their work at stations organized by the type of educational experience. We want everyone to see what is happening on the Hill in many different areas that impact the lives of our students.

 This campus-wide event celebrates student success, shares information about the amazing things our students are doing and fosters intellectual discussion and creative engagement on campus.

Professional actor Dwier Brown, best known for playing Kevin Costner’s father in the timeless classic film, “Field of Dreams,” will be the speaker at Ashland University’s 2019 Burton D. Morgan Lecture and Lunch on Tuesday, March 26. The event, which includes lunch, is free and open to the public and will be held at 11:45 a.m. in Myers Convocation Center on the AU campus.

Brown will speak on the topic, “If You Build It,” which is also the title of his book, “If You Build It…: A Book about Fathers, Fate and Field of Dreams.” Brown released his book in April of 2014; and it has since become an Amazon bestseller. In the book, Brown details inside stories from his role as John Kinsella in the movie Field of Dreams and from his own Ohio childhood on his unlikely path to becoming a Hollywood actor.

The event, which is held in memory of noted entrepreneur Burton D. Morgan, is hosted by Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship of Ashland University and is annually supported by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.

“It is an honor to be able to welcome Dwier Brown back to the Ashland University campus, and we look forward to hearing him speak and inspire our students, faculty and the community,” said Tom Sudow, director of the Burton D. Morgan Center at Ashland University.

Brown graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ashland University in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in Drama and Speech and minors in Radio/TV and Marketing. After graduation, Brown started his professional career in Chicago and moved to Los Angeles in 1982. In his 38 years of acting professionally, Brown has performed in hundreds of films, plays and television shows including Gettysburg, To Live and Die in L.A., The Cutting Edge, The Thorn Birds, Criminal Minds, Charmed, House M.D., E.R. and C.S.I.

In 1988, Brown traveled to a farm in Iowa to play Kevin Costner’s father for five minutes at the end of the movie Field of Dreams. It was those five minutes that changed his life, with the impactful words, “You wanna have a catch?” to which Brown’s character responded, “I'd like that. Very much.”

Since the movie’s release in 1989, Brown has been recognized by thousands of fans who have told him poignant stories about their fathers and how watching the film changed their lives too.

The AU event ties in with the 30th anniversary of the film, and Brown will be attending the 30th anniversary celebration that is scheduled for June 15, 2019, at the Lansing Family Farm in Dyersville, Iowa.

Michael C. Gibbons co-founded Mainstreet Ventures Inc., along with Dennis Serras and Dieter Boehm in 1981. The former chair of the National Restaurant Association earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Government from Xavier University. 

Prakash Karamchandani

Prakash Karamchandani is the Co-Founder/CEO of Balance Pan-Asian Grille. With multiple locations, over 120 employees, and $8 million-plus in revenue, his business utilizes thousands of pounds of locally grown produce for its operations. A respected and well-known professional, Karamchandani has received several awards including being named one of Fast-Casual.com’s Top 24 Fast Casual Executives. Balance Grille is ranked 33rd on the Top 100 Movers and Shakers list. He has presented at national forums including the Restaurant Leadership Conference and the Multi-Unit Restaurant Technology Conference. Karamchandani attended The University of Toledo, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance and met his business partner for Balance Grille. 

Dr. Jack Gilbert, professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California-San Diego, will present "Human and Environmental Microbial Health: A Global Perspective" at the 2019 Ellis L. and Jennie Mae Krause Lecture in Science at Marietta College on Tuesday, March 19th.

Gilbert's discussion is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Alma McDonough Auditorium, and it is free and open to the public.

Gilbert joined UC San Diego after working at the University of Chicago Medicine as a Professor in the Department of Surgery, Faculty Director of the Microbiome Center, and Senior Scientist (Adjunct) at Marine Biological Laboratory. He remains in his position as the Group Leader in Microbial Ecology at Argonne National Laboratory and the editor-in-chief of the journal mSystems.

His past research includes a focus on ecology, evolution, and metabolic dynamics of microbial ecosystems from environments including built environments, oceans, rivers, soils, air, plants, animals, and humans.

He is the co-founder of both the Earth Microbiome Project and American Gut Project, as well as the co-author of "Dirt, Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child's Developing Immune System," all of which are long-term collaborations with Rob Knight, Professor of Pediatrics and Computer Science & Engineering at UC San Diego.

Gilbert earned his Ph.D. from Unilever and Nottingham University (United Kingdom) in 2002, and received his postdoctoral training at Queens University (Canada). From 2005-10 he was a senior scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (UK).

The lecture series, which began in 2002, is supported by gifts from the late Dr. Richard M. Krause '47, the son of E.L. and Jennie Mae Krause. Dr. Krause served on the College's Board of Trustees for 22 years.

Dr. Mark Schweitzer, Senior Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, is the 2019 Milton Friedman Lecture speaker. Schweitzer, who is responsible for providing high-level oversight to the community development department and making economic presentations to the Bank and Branch boards of directors, business advisory councils, and internal and external groups, will speak at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 5th, in the Alma McDonough Auditorium. His topic will be "Opioids and the Labor Market." The event is free and open to the public.

(Rescheduled from January) “The Central Park Five” author and filmmaker Sarah Burns will sign books at 6:30 p.m. and screen and discuss her documentary at 7 p.m. about the 1989 Central Park jogger case in which five black and Hispanic teenagers were wrongfully convicted of raping a woman, spending up to 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed. All events, including book sales, will be held in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Burns directed “The Central Park Five” with her father, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns. The event is OWU’s 2019 Butler A. The Great Decisions community discussion program continues with a lecture titled "Cyber Conflicts and Geopolitics" by Cantay Çalişkan, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The discussion is free and open to the public. It will take place at noon on Fri., March 1 at the Fellowship Hall of William Street United Methodist Church, 28 W. William St., Delaware. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown-bag lunch. Complimentary coffee and tea will be provided. Following the discussion, participants will have the option of completing a survey, prepared by the Foreign Policy Association, to add their opinions to thousands of others across the nation. Survey results will be sent to executive and legislative policymakers in Washington, D.C.

The Great Decisions Discussion Program, a free community discussion series, is designed to encourage debate and discussion of the role of the United States in world affairs. The program provides materials that help people reach informed opinions on issues and encourages them to participate in the foreign-policy process.

Joe DeLoss, founder and head fryer of Columbus, Ohio-based Hot Chicken Takeover, discusses his company’s business model, which seeks to provide supportive jobs to men and women who need a fair chance at work to overcome barriers such as homelessness or previous incarceration. His presentation will be a fireside-style chat moderated by 2006 OWU alumnus Dan Sharpe, vice president for community research and grants management for The Columbus Foundation.

The chat will be held in Benes Room B of the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Brent Schroeder, BSEE ’88, was born and raised in Defiance, Ohio. After graduating from Defiance High School, Schroeder attended Ohio Northern University, where he graduated in with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. While at Ohio Northern, Schroeder was a member of the men’s varsity basketball and golf teams.

Upon graduation, Schroeder joined Therm-O-Disc, a subsidiary of Emerson Electric in Mansfield, Ohio, as a sales engineer. He subsequently held a series of increasingly responsible roles in sales, marketing, internal operations and general management. Schroeder was promoted to president of Emerson’s Fusite Division in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2003, holding that role until 2006. Schroeder then returned to Therm-O-Disc as president, serving until he joined Emerson’s Air Conditioning business as president in 2008.

In 2016, Schroeder was promoted to group president, heating and air conditioning, of Emerson’s Commercial and Residential Solutions business. In this role, Schroeder is responsible for Emerson’s businesses serving the HVAC industries, with revenue in excess of $2 billion and solutions ranging from Copeland compressors, White-Rogers valves and controls, and Sensi thermostats and monitoring solutions.

"HOW FOREIGN LANGUAGE LAUNCHED MY BUSINESS AROUND THE WORLD"

As a part of the BW Study Abroad "I Heart Travel Week" celebration, the Center for Innovation & Growth (CIG) welcomes Michael Tindall '10 who will share his entrepreneurial journey which began at Baldwin Wallace University.

Tindall will talk about how starting a student group and a film series played a role in creating his businesses after graduating as a German and English double major. His current business, Opus Global Services, provides virtual staff to organizations all over the world. Now, he is able to pursue a career that aligns with his passion for travel.

Ohio Wesleyan alumnus Nicholas E. Calio, Class of 1975, president and chief executive officer of Airlines for America, discusses “A Perspective: Congress, the White House, and Business. Bipartisanship in Partisan Politics, in Room 301 of Merrick Hall, 65 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. During his career, Calio also worked as assistant to the president for legislative affairs for Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush. He also is the current vice chair of the OWU Board of Trustees. Calio’s presentation is Ohio Wesleyan’s 2019 Benjamin F.
